Thanks for the question. Ultimately, active users is a higher level goal than retention. Retaining users will help drive sustainable growth. Retention is one of the most important levers for growth and is the best indicator of product market fit. With a high level goal being active users, a sub-goal of the product team could be retention (say Day 1 retention or Day 7 retention). Thus, there is really no conflict between the two goals.
